You don't have to hold onto an identity to be a functioning human being. In fact, the more holding on, the less you are in accord with the way things are, which is in movement not static. The wisdom of letting go comes from seeing that trying to maintain identity is not only impossible but painful, and as long as we cling, we can't have a true relationship with the world. Without holding on to identity, there is flexibility and freedom.
