a la Margaret Atwood

En el grupo de práctica de escritura de los lunes estamos leyendo y comentando The Handmaid's Tale, la genial novela distópica de la escritora canadiense. El capítulo 7 comienza así:

The night is mine, my own time, to do with as I will,
as long as I am quiet. As long as I don't move. As long as I lie still.

The choice is mine. As long as I am in line with their choices. As long as I stick to decency. As long as I don't show any signs of creativity. As long as what I choose is tasteless, colorless, vintage. The choice is mine. As long as I don't talk about the elephant in the room. As long as I smile and pretend everything is ok. As long as I play my role in the family's melodrama. The choice is mine. As long as I continue to be a straight A student. As long as I talk much less than necessary. As long as the word trauma is left out of my vocabulary. As long as I pretend not to see what's really going on. The choice is mine. As long as I contribute to the family's lies albeit with complete silence. As long as I eat whatever I get served on my plate. As long as I chew and swallow whatever is served on my plate. (Only Carmen will allow me to spit out the mass I have kept hidden in one side of my mouth, like a hamster, without leaving me hanging out to dry.) The choice is mine. As long as it is not something that they wouldn't do themselves (openly). As long as it is not geography or latin-american studies. As long as my cleavage is covered, my sexuality rendered invisible. The choice is mine. As long as I hold hands with him and bear her blaming/hating eyes without a sound. The choice is mine. As long as it is civilized and educated (according to their standards). As long as it doesn't transpire desire or lust or pleasure.
